On Oct 24th, the American Physical Society announced the winners of 2024 Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize. CAS Member XUE Qikun and Harvard Professor Ashvin Vishwanath jointly won this award for their "groundbreaking theoretical and experimental studies on the collective electronic properties of materials that reflect topological aspects of their band structure". This is the first time this prize is awarded to a Chinese physicist since 1953.
CAS Member XUE Qikun’s research interests focus on scanning tunneling microcopy and spectroscopy, molecular beam epitaxy, low-dimensional and interface-related superconductivity, topological insulators, and quantum size effects in various low-dimensional structures. He has made pioneering contribution in the quantum anomalous Hall effect. He has published over 400 research articles with more than 21,000 citations. He has given more than 150 plenary/keynote/invited speeches at various international conferences.
Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize is considered be the highest level prize in the international community of condensed matter physics. It is to recognize and encourage outstanding theoretical or experimental contributions to condensed matter physics. (Tsinghua University)
