CAS Foreign Member Efim Zelmanov Presents at Guangdong University of Technology on "Mathematics in the Modern World"

Renowned mathematician and Fields Medal laureate Professor Efim Zelmanov, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS), visited Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) for academic discussions on March 17.
DU Chengming, Vice President of GDUT, met with Prof. Zelmanov, extending a warm welcome and provided an overview of the university's latest advancements. DU expressed hope that the visit would deepen research collaboration and promote academic exchanges. In response, Prof. Zelmanov thanked GDUT for its hospitality and expressed enthusiasm for further engagement in mathematical research.
Later that afternoon, Prof. Zelmanov delivered a lecture titled "Mathematics in the Modern World" as part of GDUT's "Excellence Lecture Hall" series. The event drew an audience of over 300 faculty members and students.
Using the foundational theories of French mathematician Évariste Galois as a backdrop, Prof. Zelmanov explored the extensive applications of mathematics in fields such as cryptography, medicine, and artificial intelligence. He emphasized the pivotal role of mathematics in modern society, highlighting its beauty in unraveling mysteries, inspiring interdisciplinary breakthroughs, and probing the essence of diverse phenomena.
Deputy Party Secretary CHEN Zhuowu underscored mathematics' profound impact on the modern world, noting that it serves not only as the language of science but also a vital force for the advancement of human society. He affirmed GDUT's commitment to strengthening ties with leading global scholars and institutions, fostering high-level talent development, and advancing the university's research excellence.
