In the capacity of Co-Chair of the InterAcademy Council (IAC), Prof. LU Yongxiang took part in the Seventh IAC Board Meeting held from 29 January to 2 February in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The conference, which was attended by more than 30 representatives from member academies of the IAC Board, international organizations and observers, was co-hosted by Prof. Lu and Prof. Bruce Alberts, former President of the US National Academy of Sciences and the other IAC Co-Chair.

The participants listened to IAC annual reports on activities, finance and research projects. The two Co-Chairs spoke positively of the IAC work in 2006. Prof. Lu suggested that IAC make contributions to inventing a better future via science and technology by continuously giving priorities on high-level research reports, research into issues of world concern and strengthened cooperation and exchanges with the United Nations and other international organizations.

The meeting made decisions on launching new research projects on such issues as water resources, innovation systems in African universities, science indices and infectious disease prevention. It also invited Prof. XIA Jun, Director of the CAS Water Resources Research Center, to present a proposal on research into water resources.

The Board preliminarily decided that press conferences for releasing the report of the IAC Study Panel on Transitions to Sustainable Energy Systems will be held on June 2007 in Beijing, Brazil, and IAC member academies. Chair of the panel Steven Chu, director of the US Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will attend the conference in Beijing.

Hassan, Executive Director of the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP), Guy de Th?
