Prof. LI Daqian (Da-Tsien Li), a CAS member and a mathematician with Fudan University, has been elected a Foreign Associate Member of the French Academy of Sciences. The induction ceremony was held on Dec. 12 in Paris.

Prof. Li is one of the best experts of the analysis of the appearance of discontinuities in the solutions in nonlinear hyperbolic equations, notes a short briefing at the website of the French academy. This highly challenging field is of considerable importance in applications, since it includes shocks in gas dynamics and time-dependent nonlinear elasticity. The results obtained by Li constitute fundamental contributions to this field.

The French Academy of Sciences comprises members, foreign associates and correspondents, who are selected from among the most eminent scholars. This year 17 foreign associates were elected into the French academy.

To date, four Chinese scientists have received the honor. The other three are WANG You, WANG Zhenyi, and CHEN Zhu.
